Return to Cagayan de Oro Disaster Response
Our Disaster Response Crisis Intervention Team returned to Cagayan de Oro for training and crisis intervention. The team will start work with the Department of Education, as well as at some of the evacuation centers.
It may be worth explaining what we do. We are a religious organization and so some might assume that we focus on evangelism. That is not the case. When someone has gone through a major crisis, they should not make major decision, and should not be encouraged to. They need to be taken to a place of safety and security (physically, emotionally, and mentally). They need to be given a chance for ventilation and validation. They need a chance to plan and prepare for the future… to find a new normal.
We use NOVA (National Organization for Victim Assistance) for group intervention. We use Crisis Care Chaplaincy by the Southern Baptist Convention for training of chaplains, as well as Psychological First Aid by NCCTS (and others).

Cagayan de Oror Flooding Response Day 1 Report
Our team of 5 individuals from Bukal Life Care & Counseling Center began the trip to Cagayan de Oro (CDO) on Monday approximately 6AM. The previous week flooding resulted in over 1000 deaths and 50,000 in temporary housing. The team arrived in Manila and got on their 4PM flight to Cagayan de Oro. Unfortunately due to bad weather in CDO, the plane was diverted Davao, a city that is 10 hours from CDO by bus. Arriving in Davao, they were able to find a van going to CDO and began the overnight trek. Local government was not recommending taking the overland route because of risk of landslides, but since air travel was cancelled, there was no choice.
The team arrived around 7AM on the 27th. After breakfast, they began training local church and layleaders in crisis intervention. During the previous week, local government, government agencies, NGOs and religious groups joined together in CDO to plan response. Because of our plan to come down, the evangelical churches were given the responsibility for crisis counseling/intervention. They formed Ka-gayan Evangelical Disaster Response Network. This was the group we started training. 97 trainees were with us on the first day of training. The same trainees plan to join us on day two of training. The following day, our team will work with the trainees in crisis counseling/intervention with primary and secondary victims of the flooding.
After the first day of training, the team visited some of the major flood areas. Now they are catching up on their sleep (having been awake for two full days). We will update you all in a couple of days.

Clarification Regarding Our Services
We have been getting some inquiries regarding residential counseling and care services. So as a point of clarification:
1. We do not have residential services. Our present services are limited to outpatient counseling in Baguio and Manila (and soon to add Bacolod). Questions regarding outpatient counseling sessions may be made to 0933-302-0373.
2. Additionally, we do chaplaincy services as part of our CPE and CPO programs at a number of places. These include (but are not limited to) hospitals (such as Benguet General Hospital, Baguio General Hospital, and Philippine Children's Medical Center) and detention centers (such as Baguio City Jail).
3. We should note that we are in the VERY EARLY stages of discussion regarding setting up a Residential Counseling Center in the Baguio City area. However, it does not exist at this time and cannot promise when (or if) it will be done.

Article on CPE and Disaster Response training
Please look at this link. It is an article suggesting that CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education) is the best preparation for disaster response. This is opposed to the conventional wisdom of the 2-5 day crash training course.
Of course, since CPE is 400 hours of training per unit, it really should be more than a 30-40 hour total time course. Still, would love to hear your thoughts.

Bukal Life-Manila Update

Bukal Life-Manila will work with and through PCMC (pending memorandum of agreement) providing a primary ministry and training point for our CPE program. We believe this will be a great learning opportunity for us, and a valuable service for the patients and family at PCMC.

Dinner for a Cause-A Serenade (Report)
What a great night we had. Approximately 120 people joined us at the Sangkabalayan Center at Baguio Cathedral for good food, good music, and good fellowship. Several provided music for this event.
1. UCCP (Baguio) Christian Couples Choir. They sang opening and closing songs as well as a primary presentation of 5 popular hymns/Christian songs.
2. Brevarian Singers. A trio of young ladies and guitarist that provided two country gospel songs.
3. Singing Priests. Several Catholic priests sang Christian songs that they have been performing together since seminary, including one song written by a classmate who (sadly) died too young.
4. Jeffrey Linang. Local seminarian and pastor who sang two songs, one to start and and one to end the main performances.
The evening ended with handing out certificates of completion for CPE batches 2 and 3A. Batch 3B (Manila) will have their graduation and certificates on November 12 in Manila.
We are thankful to them. We are also thankful to the Sangkabalayan Center for allowing us to use their facilities for free (and to Rev. Fr. German Legaspi in helping us with these arrangements).
We are also appreciative of all who gave generously of their time and money. The Dinner was to raise awareness and money for CPE scholarships for clergy and layleaders seeking to serve God through pastoral care and counseling. If you are interested in supporting some CPE students, please contact us at info@bukallife.org

New CPE Batches Start
CPE 2011 Batch 3A (Baguio) and Batch 3B (Manila) began this last weekend. The Baguio group has 3 trainees presently, while the Manila group has 4. Both groups may have 1 or 2 added soon. Combining these with Batch 2 CPE Accelerated that is on-going, we are presently having the largest number of CPE trainees at any time outside of our Normal CPE Intensive season (March-May).
Please support the trainees in prayer as they learn through ministering to those in need.

More August Updates
A. Had an important staff meeting today. We are investigating our future role and priority in ministry. Should we be a training institution that provides care and guidance, or are we a care and guidance institution that provides training. Even though these sound the same, structurally there is a great difference. So we are presently investigating this.
B. Annual meeting on September 3rd, after the CPSP chapter meeting.
C. Have planned or have potential gatherings with several other groups in the next few weeks. These include One Sending Body (late August) in Cebu, KCPE (Late September) in Korea, PABATS (early September) in Davao, and CARTS (mid-August).

Medical Mission at Irisan Dumpsite
Doing ministry work at a dumpsite in the Philippines is a touchy thing. In many such locations, well-meaning Christians have created more dependency than growth in people who work and live at these dumpsites. Acknowledging this concern, we felt that we could be of help there, partnering with Mountain of Blessing... a small group that works with people at the dumpsite. The dumpsite has been closed for over a year (at least in the sense of no new garbage being brought in from Baguio City). However, there is still tons and tons of recyclables that are slowly sorted out and collected. Hundreds of people still live and work there.
We did our medical mission at the day care just outside the dumpsite. We were able to treat close to 400 patients. General medical, dental, and minor surgical services were provided. We were surprised at the number of children with infections. We had to go back to our medicine supplier to get more antibiotics and other medicines to cover the greater than expected needs.
We thank the large number of volunteers. Among these include Mountain of Blessing, CEF-Baguio, West Baguio Baptist Church, and local volunteers.

William & Viola Farrell Symposium of Pastoral Care and Counseling (2011) Completed
It was a great day. After months of preparation, the first William & Viola Farrell Symposium of Pastoral Care & Counseling was completed.
We had 105 attend coming from churches, NGOs, schools, hospitals and other organizations. The goal of this series is to provide training that bridges the gap between secular and religious counseling. The goal is to provide people from different fields involved with helping people, to empower them to deal with the psychological, emotional, and spiritual needs of their patients/clients.
Dr. Cesar Espineda was the main speaker. He is a Diplomate with the College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy. He has graciously taken on a role of mentor for both CPSP-Philippines and Bukal Life Care & Counseling Center. Both of his topics centered on the importance of self-awareness and self-understanding of the counselor.
The first topic was "The Person as a Benchmark for Counseling." The second was "Transference-- Our Un/Conscious Reaction in the Human-Patient Encounter."
The lectures were also tied to discussions as a whole group, as well as small-group discussion afterwards. Additionally, a cultural performance was provided by Batang, a Cordilleran dance troupe. They did dances from Kalinga, Mountain Province, and Ifugao. Additionally, we had a presentation of artwork by local artist, Rommel Pidaso. The work showed creation of culturally relevant "basura art", or artwork constructed from garbage. Creation of meaning and beauty from what has been rejected certainly seems to be a relevant counseling metaphor.
We thank all those who attended. Of course we also thank our guest lecturer, our cultural presenters, volunteers, and sponsors.

CPSP Inauguration in the Philippines
On April 20, we had the formal inauguration of CPSP-Philippines with the formation of the first chapter of the College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy (CPSP)—the Baguio Chapter. The inauguration was held at Riverview Park in Asin, Benguet, Philippines, during a clinical pastoral education retreat.
The formal presentation was made by Dr. Raymond Lawrence, the General Secretary of the CPSP. The Baguio Chapter of the CPSP is only the second such chapter in Southeast Asia, and is presided over by Rev. Joel S. Aguirre.
In addition, two training centers were also announced for CPSP-Philippines. These are Philippine Baptist Theological Seminary and BUKAL Life Care & Counseling Center. Dr. Ryan Clark, professor of pastoral care and counseling at PBTS, and Celia P. Munson, training coordinator at BUKAL Life, represented these institutions at the event. A follow-on presentation of this relationship was made on May 23 with Dr. Joyce Abugan, President of Philippine Baptist Theological Seminary, and Robert Munson, the Administrator of BUKAL Life.
The College of Pastoral Supervision & Psychotherapy is a theologically based covenant community, dedicated to “Recovery of Soul.” CPSP offers accredited training and credentialing for Pastoral Psychotherapy, Pastoral Supervision, Pastoral Counseling, and Clinical Chaplaincy.

March 4 Activities Report
March 4 was a busy day for us. The morning was our seminar in "Managing Conflict and Confrontation Well." The training was done as part of an all day activity involving the Department of Psychology at UC. Between 150 and 200 attended.
In the evening we had a dinner/meeting for CPE supervisors. This was for preparing for the CPE program starting on March 21 and continuing through May. We had great food (thanks to Ate Flor). We all are excited about the upcoming program for our 22 trainees.

Training Seminar at IHMS Report
We had a great time doing a half-day seminar at Immaculate Heart of Mary School (IHMS) in La Trinidad. We spoke to approximately 100 parents and guardians of children at the school. Bob Munson provided a review of IQ testing and interpreting and utilizing the results. Mrs. Tess Leones provided a training seminar on Responsible Parenting and Parenting Styles. Ptr. Ricky, Celia, Jehny, and Alicia assisted with logistics, question and answer, and other aspects of the seminar.
We thank Sister Tomasa for inviting us and for the staff at IHMS for taking care of us and sharing a wonderful lunch with us.
The Powerpoint for the seminar on Responsible Parenting and Parenting Styles is available at http://www.bukallife.org/training_aids.php.

Recollection Service and Values Training
We held a Values Training and Recollection Service for approximately 80 students from Cordillera Career Development College (1st, 2nd, and 3rd year high school students). It was held at the Mount Saint Paul Retreat Center in Pico, La Trinidad.
We had a great time, and hope the kids did as well. Our focus was on healthy relationships. We focused on healthy relationship with God, healthy relationship with self (along with self-understanding), and healthy relationship with others. In the afternoon we had the ecumenical service. This included some self-evaluation and some fun and games.
All of the students were very attentive and we hope and believe that all involved took something away from it that would help with their lives.
As a counseling center, we tend to focus on psycho-emotional issues. However, as a faith-based institution we also believe in a holistic understanding of the human condition. This means that we need to address the physical, emotional/values, spiritual, and mental components of the individual, and need to address other social units including, family, friends, and community. We appreciated the opportunity to integrate some of these ideas.

Medical Mission at ICC (Irisan) Report
We had a great time at ICC (International Christian Colleges) this Saturday (November 6). Thanks to Nurse Karen Vizcara for inviting us and setting things up for us. We also thank Dr. Rivera, Ptr. Orencio, and several of the students for helping make the visit a success.
We treated 182 patients. Most of these had medical check-ups. Over 40 had dental care as well. Additonally, we had 7 for minor surgery. Some of the patients also came from Mountain of Blessing, a group that works with people in Irisan... particularly the dumpsite.
We had over 20 volunteers so we won't list them all here. But we thank each one for their involvement. This was a smaller mission, but a great opportunity to serve God. We are working with ICC with some other work including Psychometric testing, so we hope that this partnership will be fruitful for the school and community.

Upcoming Medical Missions?
We have had a lot of inquiries regarding upcoming medical missions. While we are working with some other groups (such as in Kalinga and Iloilo) with their medical missions, we are taking a bit of a break on medical missions. We tentatively have a small one planned for October. However, for the most part, we are stepping away from this for the time being.
Why? Because we are putting most of our energies right now in opening our pastoral care and counseling center. With getting certification with PRC and CPSP, as well as CPE training, and heading several seminars (along with psychometric testings and normal counseling) we simply have had to reprioritize for now.
If you want to contact us about medical missions (info@bukallife.org) please feel free to do it, of course. If we are able to accommodate you... great. Otherwise, we might be able to help you with contacting other groups.

Medical News
We have not been doing medical missions in the last couple of months. Primarily this is because we have been focusing on setting up our Counseling Center. Additionally, the increasing cost of medical missions make them difficult to do on a regular basis.
However, it is great when we can help others in tangible ways.
Three weeks ago BIBAK did a medical mission in Kalinga Province. We are happy that we were able to provide our friends with logistical support for this effort that was to aid in a church plant there. They were able to help approximately 575 patients.
We plan to be helping some other friends in a similar manner in their work in Iloilo. Hope to have good news on that effort in August.

June Update
Just completed the graduation for CPE on Tuesday (June 15). On the 14th had the orientation of the CPE-Extended. This is 240 hour training (versus the normal 400 hour) training in pastoral care practicum. There are 5 students. These include people from 5 different denominations (Catholic, Episcopalian, CAMA, Assemblies of God, and Fundamental Baptist). We believe this diversity should add to the educational value of the training.

June Updates
We have had a number of people asking about medical missions. We appreciate the interest, but we have not been able to be too helpful. The reason is that we are taking a bit of a break from medical missions. Part of this is because we have had a horribly hectic April and May... so we are trying to get a bit of rest. So what has happened up to this point? Here are a few things (January - May):
1. Had several medical missions. These include
Saplad-David, Macabebe. 200 treated
Pulo, Macabebe. 160 treated
Street Children, Baguio 50 treated (provided supplies)
Gaswiling, Kapangan 250 treated
2. Had a lot of training.
Basic 1st Aid/CPR (with Phil Red Cross) 20 trained
2 from our team atteneded Haggai Institute NTS
Crisis Chaplaincy 2 week program 5 trained
Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) 9 week 11 trained
Crisis Symposium at University of Cordilleras 34 trained
CPE Symposium 40 trained
COMDEV 3 day training 19 trained
First Aid for STMers 40 trained
3. Additional activities
Film showing at National Police Academy, Baguio 200 attended
Helped with VVM film showing in Gaswiling 150 attended
Co-sponsored blood-drive 30 gave blood
So what is going on in June?
a. Bob is in the United States for a few weeks visiting friends, relatives, and churches.
b. Ptr. Joel, Celia and others are pushing through with paperwork with SEC and PRC for the counseling center which should be formally opening in just a few weeks.
c. Dave is finishing a summer program with youth in Guisad, Baguio City.
d. The Co-op is preparing for its membership orientation.
As we enter July, we hope to be up and running with the counseling center... and we hope to be back to scheduling medical missions and training seminars. Hope this information is of help. If you have any questions, feel free to email us at info@bukallife.org.

May Updates
April is over. Praise God for surviving it. It has been a tremendously busy month... so happy to take a wee bit of a break. Still a few things going on.
1. Clinical Pastoral Education program is continuing through the end of May. Will let you know when graduation will be exactly.
2. Working on the paperwork to formally open the counseling center. It will have West Baguio Baptist Church as its primary office. The facilities are almost done.
3. We have put the Kids Club in a state of haiatus for awhile. This was because of the typhoons last October and November (leading schools to having Saturday classes making our Saturday groups impossible). However, Dave Baltazar (with a couple of helpers) has started a Summer Kids Club for neighborhood boys in the Ferguson Road area (it meets at the headquarters of Bukal Life). Dave and his friends have been doing a great job and this small, growing group has been quite successful. We will have to see where we are going from here. Prayerfully considering expanding the ministry beyond Summer.
4. Looking at a couple of sites for medical missions. We are seeking to do less medical missions, but want to continue doing this sort of ministry occasionally as a method to open doors for long-term ministry forms.
5. By the way. We don't always put our information all in the same place. We also put some different news and pictures on our blogsite "bukallife.wordpress.com" and two facebook pages "bukal life ministries" and "shepherd's oikos".

Blood Drive at PBTS, Baguio
The blood drive with the Philippine Red Cross was accomplished on Feb 15. This partnered with Asia Vision-STM (and was done in the office of AV-STM, on the campus of Philippine Baptist Theological Seminary) and the PBTS student council. Approximately 45 came to give blood. After screenings, 30 were able to donate. We hope to work together with the PRC and expand on the solid based.
This was our first attempt to support this type of work in Baguio City. While we generally focus on wholistic work (integration spiritual and social ministries) we believe that saving lives is clearly in line with Christ's ministry and His example for us.

A number connected with Bukal Life are there. Ces Garcia, who often joins us on medical missions, and is part of “Discipline Others 2 Love Jesus” heads Haggai Institute locally. Celia and Angie are trainees. Three other members of Bukal Life hoped to be there but had job conflicts. www.haggai-institute.com

Street Children Outreach
The group of students from Saint Louis University (Baguio City) joined with "Save our Street Children" for a medical mission. Bukal Life was happy to provide most all of the medicines and vitamins for the project. Drs. Rene and Evita Buada (friends both of the SLU team and Bukal Life) provided medical care. "Save our Street Children" works with around 100 children in Baguio. About half of these came to the medical mission held on January 30, 2010. Vitamins were set aside for those that did not come.

Red Cross Training Completed
We completed Basic Life Saving, First Aid, and CPR training at our headquarters in Guisad, Baguio City on January 8th. We had about 20 people finish the training. Most of them are involved directly or indirectly with Bukal. Several joined us from Asia Vision Short Term Missions as well.
It was a great and demanding time. Thanks to the instructors from Philippine Red Cross. Also the food was great (Thanks Ate Flor!)

Kid's Club Party
Wow!! A great party. Around 85 children. Including parents and volunteers, we had around 125 in attendance. With games (Going Bulilite versus Honeymoon versus City Camp/Queen of Peace), coloring, face painting, snacks, goody bags, prizes, and more… it was quite a time.
Thanks to all of the volunteers (youth and adults) that brought it all together!!

Ministry Partners
Check the Ministry Partners page. It is SLOWLY growing. Some ministry partners are part of Bukal Life. Others are groups that we are happy to think of as partners in ministry.
We have updated pages on Shekinah Home (an orphanage run by Brian and Joanne Whittle) and Reaching every Tribe Ministries (headed by the Winter family). Hope to be adding and updating more very soon.
